Jute Rugs

Though less known as a floor covering material, the first rugs manufactured in India were possibly made from Jute. This fiber traces its origins back to ancient times, when it had proven its use as a reliable material for sackcloth.  Known today for its tensile strength, this fiber has become primary ingredient in manufacturing ropes, burlap and sacks.  Jute, which is 61 percent cellulose, is grown throughout Asia, chiefly in India and Bangladesh. The primary fibers in the fiber bundle are short and brittle.
Jute is creamy white to brown in color. While, soft, lustrous, and pliable when first traditionally used as a carpet backing, jute is one the finest and softest of natural floor covering materials. It is made from yarn derived from the fibrous stalks of the jute plant and woven into either a boucle or herringbone pattern. Naturally a pale neutral brown, it can be bleached to create very pale cream, or dyed and then woven, somewhat like a carpet, to create simple patterns. Different weights of yarn create finer or heavier textures. Because jute rugs are so soft, it is ideal for bedroom floors, but it is not practical material for areas of heavy wear, as it is difficult to clean and develops watermarks if it gets wet.  For such reason, jute is not recommended in locations with high moisture levels.
Given proper care, jute rugs are expected to last for years.  In low to medium traffic situations, where these materials are not expected to be subjected to moisture jute rugs require no more than periodic vacuuming or shaking.
