Seagrass Rugs

The least expensive and one of the most versatile of the natural floor coverings, Seagrass is grown in coastal regions in China and India. It is a stable, almost impermeable, fiber which is highly resistant to stains and dirt. Seagrass, a grass grown rather like rice in wet paddy fields-hence the name. This is a hard, yet, smooth fiber which is woven onto a latex-backed floor covering as a simple or a basket weave pattern. An excellent neutral color in its own right, brown and beige strands with a definite green tinge-it cannot be dyed. Wefts of other colors can be worked in, however, to provide a hint of color. Seagrass rugs are a practical material; it is relatively non-absorbent and hard, it does not often stain and dirt is easily brushed loose.
Such characteristics make seagrass an ideal floor covering, even for areas exposed to heavy traffic. Apart from stairs, where its smooth, slightly slippery finish makes it unsuitable, seagrass carpet is at home almost anywhere. It is anti-static, naturally stain-and-dye-resistant, has an attractive twill look and a random mix of natural colors.
Unlike other natural fibers which react to moisture, seagrass can withstand some reasonable amount of moisture. This product has become a favorite of beach front owners and can be seen in lobbies of popular hotels around the world. Though seagrass comes only in natural shades of brown and sage, its rare combination of beauty, durability, and affordability, makes it a practical option for most homeowners.
